Latest Lines

Another week over and more exciting moments in sports behind us. Here are the biggest lines of the past week.

1. Penn State's football scandal is the biggest headline of the weekend, as the former defensive coordinator Jerry Sandusky was accused of molesting eight boys over the past 15 years. He was released on $100,000 bail.

2. The biggest college football game of the year was played on Saturday, when No. 1 ranked LSU took on Alabama. LSU won in overtime in a low-scoring game.

3. Giants pitcher and LSU alum, Brian Wilson, was sporting his alma mater colors and spirited personality on ESPN's College GameDay, where he picked LSU to beat Alabama.

4. One of the biggest racing events of the year, The Breeders Cup, a series of Thoroughbred horse races, took place this weekend.

5. The NFL continues to excite fans (and disappoint in my case). The Baltimore Ravens beat the Pittsburgh Steelers in the last drive of Sunday Night Football—with only eight seconds left in the game.

6. The Miami Dolphins finally picked up a win, killing the Kansas City Chiefs Sunday. The Indianapolis Colts remain the only winless team this season.

7. Runners took foot in the famous New York City Marathon this weekend, and the couple below become engaged shortly after completing the run.

8. USA softball stunner Jennie Finch raised $30,000, receiving a dollar for every racer she passed while running the NYC Marathon. Other celebs raising money running were model Christy Turlington and Dancing with the Stars alum Apollo Ohno.

9. Former Heavyweight Champion of the World, Joe "Smokin" Frazier passed away yesterday from liver cancer. Frazier was only 67.

Enjoy your week and have fun using these lines to display your sportyness!

(Also, don't miss the first Thursday night NFL game since the start of the season. The San Diego Chargers and Oakland Raiders battle it out for the AFC West. Go Chargers!)

Latest Lines

The past week of sports was one for the books. With a nail-biting end to the World Series, football upsets and extra drama in the celeb-athlete couple department, there were lots of things to see. Here is a wrap up of the week in case you were a little too busy trick-or-treating.

1. Kim Kardashian and baller hubby Kris Humphries called it quits after 72 days of marriage. With a wedding bill of at least $10 million, that equals $138,888 a day of newlywed bliss.

2. In other celeb gossip, Jessica Simpson finally made her pregnancy official after weeks of speculation from the tabloids. Jess is engaged to ex-NFL player Eric Johnson, and she waited for Halloween to make the "mummy" announcement.

3. Moving on to the NFL. After another exciting weekend in football, the New Orleans Saints and New England Patriots suffered big losses, with the 49ers and Steelers looking strong. (Yes, my Chargers totally blew it as well, but I'll skip that.)

4. The World Series came down to seven games (something you don't see too often) and the St. Louis Cardinals took the champion honors this year.
 photo via Fox News

5. St. Louis Cardinals' manager, Tony La Russa, who is one of the most respected names in the major leagues, called it quits after bringing home another World Series ring.

6. New York Yankees pitcher CC Sabathia signed on for a one-year $25 million contract, to potentially stay in pinstripes until 2017 (and to possibly receive a total of $142 million!).

7. Bitter California rivals from USC and Stanford went head-to-head in a huge college football game, with Stanford coming out on top, 56-48.

Now that the MLB season is over for the year, stay tuned for lots of trades and big-money contracts.

Apologies for lagging in posts this past week—in between finishing up a job, starting a new one and a cross-state road trip, my days are starting to blur together. Plus, my Chargers completely crashed and burned Sunday, so I'm still recovering from the loss (not to mention my hangover due to post-game depression.)

But here are the latest lines from the past week in sports:

1. After losing their starting QB Peyton Manning to injury, the Indianapolis Colts are setting new team records (in a bad way). They are still winless and suffered a humiliating 62-7 loss to the New Orleans Saints on Sunday.
 photo via SBNation

2. The Washington Capitals remain the only undefeated team in the NHL, holding a record of 7-0.

 3. The Oakland Raiders were also subject to QB injury and picked up former Heisman Trophy winner Carson Palmer (even though he did nothing to help the team who was shutout Sunday.)
 photo via Footbasket

4. Tributes are taking place all over the country to pay respect to Dan Wheldon, the race car driver who tragically died in a race recently. Safety issues are being brought up throughout the racing community to try to prevent more accidents.

5. A St. Louis Cardinals player made a statement announcing that his teammate Albert Pujols is a better baseball player than the legendary Babe Ruth.
 photo via Total Pro Sports

 6. Speaking of baseball and the Cardinals, the Texas Rangers are up on the Cards 3-2 in the World Series. If the Rangers win tomorrow night, they take the ring.

7. Two weeks of the NBA have already been officially cancelled, with rumors swirling that two more weeks will be headed down the same path.

8. The NFL took the stage in London this weekend (as they do once a year now), and the Chicago Bears beat the Tampa Bay Buccs.

Now go impress a sporty stud with one (or all!) of these pick-up lines!

And please keep voting! Only a few days left.

NFL Goes Pink

Notice anything extra cute about the boys playing football recently? From gloves, to mouth guards, and of course shoes, NFL stars were sporting neon pink all weekend long.

Brandon Jacobs, New York Giants

For the past few Octobers the NFL has teamed up with the American Cancer Society for a month-long campaign called "A Crucial Catch." Players, coaches, and NFL staff have the chance to raise awareness for Breast Cancer by wearing pink. The more pink each player wears the better, as these items are being actioned off and money will be given to team charities and the Cancer Society.

Want to help out but not a football stud? Here is what I'll be picking up this week to help support our lady lumps and the NFL. And even though I'm not a huge fan of girly sports gear (or guys in pink), this is definitely an exception. Props to the players and those of you helping to fight the battle!

Moneyball Premiere

Stranded with no plans on this glorious Friday? No sweat. One of the most anticipated (and sports friendly!) movies of the year makes it debut today and it's the perfect way to start off your weekend.

It's the true story of the broke Oakland A's in the early 2000's and general manager Billy Beane's unique out-of-the-box attitude. The movie has been getting great reviews and critics are even throwing the "Oscar" word around.

Not into sports flicks but your guy is? Here are a couple reasons why you won't be disappointed with Moneyball.

1. The main character is played by the one and only Brad Pitt.
photo via Just Jared
(OK, I know he doesn't quite look like this anymore, but he's still majorly hot.)

2. The newly fit Jonah Hill brings his charming humor to the screen.
 photo via Zimbio
Though he claims this movie is a lot different than his usual roles, he says there are still laughs to be had.

I'm not even a huge movie fan and I plan on spending part of my weekend devoted to this film—popcorn and Milk Duds included, obvi.

Enjoy your weekend! (And don't forget to set your fantasy teams and to spend your Sunday with the NFL.)

Fashion Forward

Fashion Week rolled through NYC last week, and though there were a fair share of socialites and actors filling the showrooms, there was also a hefty amount of athletes taking it all in.

Whether they were there for the beautiful models, the publicity or they're serious fashionistas, jocks crowded the runway this season in New York.

From NBA stars to tennis champs, here are some athletes who lined up for the next greatest trend.

I wonder what trend these players will be sporting this fall?

NFL Traders

I go on vacation for a week and the NFL blows up.

From the end of the lockout to endless trades and resigning deals, everything in the football world is buzzing.

The NFL players and owners finally sucked it up and came to an agreement, leaving the lockout lifted as of last week. It's official ladies, football is back (well, almost!).

Since the lockout has ended, the NFL has been in a frenzy of free-agent trades, aka players switching to different teams. Though it can be too much to keep up with, and a lot can go over your head, I'll give you some of the biggest trades of the week. Here are a few big-name players (who you have hopefully heard of), and where they have ended up.

After 13 unforgettable seasons in the NFL, Randy Moss announced his retirement today. Although saying that you retire in the NFL usually means that you'll just un-retire and come back next season, it's still breaking news.

Preseason games start in just a couple weeks, so until then, get your fantasy football leagues all situated and get set for the best part of the year (and for a Chargers Super Bowl ring!).

Time to Draft

You may be curious as to why I'm talking about the NBA. Didn't the season just end? Well, yes, it did, but that doesn't mean everything basketball is done with. The 2011 NBA Draft will begin tomorrow, with teams keeping their fingers crossed that they not only score some raw talent but that the looming lockout stays far away as well.

Basketball is not an easy thing to keep track of and getting lost in the shuffle of endless teams and players is nothing to be ashamed of. That's why I'm going to make checking out some future NBA stars pretty brainless on your end. Here are 10 of the most talked about babes heading into the draft tomorrow...

1. Kyrie Irving, Duke
Irving is an Australian-American basketball star who is bypassing his final three years of college for the big leagues.

2. Derrick Williams, Arizona
Williams originally signed with USC but then changed his mind and moved over to AZ. He was the Pac-10 Player of the Year this season.

3. Brandon Knight, Kentucky
This Florida-native frosh spent only one year playing college ball before declaring for the NBA draft.

4. Enes Kanter, Turkey
Due to receiving cash benefits, this 6'11" Turkish star is ineligible to play basketball in college and declared for the draft.

5. Jonas Valanciunas, Lithuania
I have no idea how to pronounce this dude's last name or the team he plays for in Lithuania (Lietuvos Rytas), but I do know he's a top draft pick.

6. Kawhi Leonard, San Diego State
In high school this SDSU star was named "Mr. Basketball California". His father was shot and killed at a car wash in 2008.

7. Kemba Walker, UConn
Walker was born in the Bronx and is not only an amazing baller but a dancer and sociology major as well.

8. Jan Vesely, Czech Republic
The 6'11" Czech star is part of a family full of talented athletes. His father played basketball, his mother played volleyball and his sister is also a bball player.

9. Bismack Biyombo, Congo
Nicknamed "B-Smack", this Congolese stud was discovered at the age of 16 and plays in the Spanish ACB League.

10. Jimmer Fredette, BYU
This Mormon baller has acquired a hefty sum of awards throughout his career and actually played out all four of his college years.

If you haven't already, make some bets on who will go in the top 10 with your guy (or lady) friends. Enjoy draft day!

Football On Hold

I first reported on the NFL Lockout in this post, but since then a lot has happened.

I'm sure you've heard tidbits here and there, so I'll try to make it as easy as possible. Here's the latest lowdown:

The NFL owners have basically "locked out" the players, a.k.a the players aren't able to practice on regular turf or enter the locker rooms, and as of now, there won't be a 2011-2012 NFL season. Tear.

The owners feel that the players are making too much money and deserve pay cuts. The players feel that the owners are being greedy and need to take the cut...

Star players like Drew Brees, Peyton Manning and Tom Brady aren't shy about voicing their opinions on the situation, and there has even been a lawsuit filed against the NFL. The players want what they have been receiving in the past: health care for their families, same number of games, lots of $ and to play the game.

Most fans are taking the players side. Without an NFL season, there would be a huge loss for not only players, the cities they play in, those employed by the NFL and everyone that deals with the sport, but it would also crush loyal fans.

Not having football in America is like Snooki not having a spray tan, like not having McDonald's breakfast when you're hungover, like not having spiked eggnog on Christmas!

Football is a necessity to many Americans, including myself. Life would suck without it. There are only so many Sundays sans full-contact sports that one girl can handle.

Until further negotiations take place, we're pretty much stuck. Hopefully the tides will turn and come August, we'll be crammed in a bar, sporting jerseys and rooting on our fav NFL team. Fingers crossed!
